Mark Venables

Founder and CEO

Mark Venables

Founder and CEO

Mark is a specialist in sales and business development. After a long and successful career in IT sales he has excellent connections in the technology and healthcare sectors. Clients value the fact that he understands business from an insider’s point of view, having built and run his own technology company. Mark is now focused on growing Highland Marketing, winning new business and developing its future strategy. Mark has a vast network of contacts within the technology and healthcare industry and he works hard to grow that network on a daily basis. Renowned for his tenacity and his positive outlook, he never gives up, something that clients really value. And it is here, in his second role at Highland Marketing, that he can assist clients with their business development and sales efforts.
“What I offer clients is an extensive network of contacts, and a detailed understanding of the realities of running and developing a business. It’s in my nature to communicate whether it’s with board members, key decision makers and stakeholders or individual staff. My goal is to understand their needs and offer a solution. And through this I can help build new relationships for our clients, either with potential partners, prospective customers or influential organisations and individuals.”
A little about Mark:
  • Sailing boats – He developed an early love of sailing – a skill he learnt aboard a 58ft captured German World War II yacht called Overlord. In 1982 he attempted to sail the world, but his vessel was nearly sunk in the same storm which prevented TV presenter John Noakes from making a similar voyage.
  • Selling antiques – Mark learned the gentle art of sales from his dad who had a specialist antiques business in Farnham, Surrey. He remembers his first ever sale, made as a lad in the 1980s, when he got £900 for an 18th century, veneered tilt top hexagonal table.
  • Mark has a knack of finding ways to make business entertaining as well as profitable, whether it’s with client trips to Grand Prix races or deep sea fishing expeditions. If you want a chat about what Highland Marketing can do for you then he’ll happily join you for a meeting at your office, or even a round of golf – at which you’ll almost certainly win!

Susan Venables

Founder & Client Services Director

Susan Venables

Susan Venables

Founder & Client Services Director

Susan takes a fresh approach to marketing and public relations. She established Highland Marketing in 2002 after a long career working with well-known agencies and clients ranging from SMEs to multi-nationals. During the past 20 years she has helped many companies within the technology and healthcare IT sectors to raise brand awareness and reach new potential customers. Susan is respected by clients, getting them and their services noticed when and where it matters, and by the media where she has many long-standing contacts.
“Effective marketing and communications demands a lot of passion, commitment and experience, and that’s exactly what we provide for clients. Right from the start I match them with a team of people who each have at least ten years’ experience, and who often know what it’s like to run their own business. That mixture of maturity and determination is very potent. Clients really notice the difference, especially those who have previously worked with agencies that send in their top people to win an account then hand the actual work to inexperienced junior staff.”
A little about Susan:
  • Champion athlete – During her first year at Durham University she thought she would have a go at rowing. By the third year she was winning national competitions and was later part of the GB women’s lightweight rowing squad.
  • Dog lover – Susan developed a love of dogs when she was a little girl in the Warwickshire market town of Southam when the family’s pet used to protect her pram. These days she has two black Labradors, and a Samoyed to exercise.
  • No second best – As a child she always had a rebellious streak combined with a determination to excel, especially at sports like hockey, athletics and netball. Those traits carried over into adult life where she found her niche establishing and building her own business rather than following a corporate career path.

A little about Lyn:
  • Lyn has an impressive educational record, with a first degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University, and a Masters degree in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
  • Before taking up her current post, her journalism employers included the Health Service Journal and digitalhealth.net (formerly EHealth Insider). Over her career, she has also worked with think-tanks, including the King’s Fund and the Nuffield Trust, and major companies, such as Microsoft.

Debra Hollis-King

Finance Manager

Debra Hollis-King

Debra Hollis-King

Finance Manager

With 15 years experience of working in an accountancy practice, Debra has been exposed to many areas of accountancy from auditing through to taxation. This knowledge has been further enhanced by years of study. Debra is a qualified accounting technician (AAT) and is one paper away from becoming a chartered certified accountant (ACCA). More recently, as part of her progression, Debra decided that she wanted to play a more active role in helping a business to grow, develop and succeed. Rather than visiting a company two to three times a year she wanted the opportunity to become involved in the daily decision making of a business so that she could make a difference. Highland Marketing has provided that opportunity, she is now responsible for the day-to-day running of the financial and operational aspects of the business, as well as the future planning.

“Having joined Highland Marketing as finance manager in July 2013, I believe that my knowledge and experience will help the company to achieve its financial and overall business objectives. I have always admired companies that have high ambitions, which Highland Marketing clearly has. I welcome the challenge of making those ambitions become reality.”

A little bit about Debra:
  • Debra is an avid sports fan and challenges anyone to find a sport that she won’t watch. One of her main ambitions is to visit all 4 tennis grand slams in her lifetime.
  • Her other passion in life is travelling having visited Australia, New Zealand, the USA and many countries in Europe. No continent is off the radar! Her only concern is that she has far too many countries left to visit!!
  • Debra’s secret love is DIY. She relishes every opportunity to assemble flat pack furniture. Appreciating that this may seem rather quirky, she is quick to point out that her other hobbies include cycling, reading and socialising with friends and family.
